Elk crossing
It seems strange to have elk crossing so close to the coast, but signs for them are pretty much everywhere on this part of US-101. Steve found a little meadow with a herd that put on quite a show for us. They were only about 20 yards away, and they were clearly unimpressed by the humans.
As you can see, we spent most of our time following the big buck, who was clearly in charge of the herd. He kept the other younger males away from his girls. In the second shot below he started bugling.
After watching the elk for awhile, we stopped for a stroll through the nearby Lady Bird Johnson grove. Because you can’t have too many redwoods!
