Back deck post work begins
After putting a slight dent in Lowe’s lumber section, we started laying the posts which will act as the footing for the deck upon which we will install the kids’ backyard pavilion. The decked area will be 16x16, so you can imagine how many Pythagorean Theorems were calculated and recalculated today in an effort to achieve a true square.
We will have 9 posts cemented in, upon which the joists and decking will lay. The posts obviously will not be as tall as they are today - we will level and cut down tomorrow after they are all set. Initially we bought the wrong type of concrete, and then in correcting that, we didn’t buy enough of the right concrete. So supply chain issues led to some Day 1 productivity problems. As Montana pointed out, “If we were Amish, we would already be done.” Fair enough.
But we are off to a strong enough start, namely because we DID start. I began the day as Assistant #1 but was swiftly demoted to Official Photographer once Montana came on site. Luckily there was plenty to photograph both on the project and in the beautiful blooming fields!
Meanwhile, this is happening, ahhhhh.
Montana’s color experiments on the dog kennel. We are all in violent agreement that we love the left-hand gray and that gray buildings do NOT need white trim!
Of course, it’s another job for TAZ, our awesome post hole digger. By the amount of solid rock we hit here (usually at about 6”), we absolutely could not put up any kind of posts without him.
It’s nice to have TAZ, but it’s still really hard work. When TAZ hits that rock, Steve has to be careful to not yank his own arms off! Too bad we don’t have that hot tub area built yet. Luckily he has a chiropracter appointment scheduled for Monday.
Our pretty old helper girl. She absolutely LOVES it when we she is invited to hang out when we do outdoor projects.
Apple blossoms doing their thing.
They don’t lie when they call it “fast-acting cement” - this stuff sets in minutes.
While they sweated it out, I took pictures of little flowers in the tall grass.
I can’t wait until this house is painted! No more white or contrasting trim around any of the windows, and doors painted an almost-black shade of gray. Yes!
It’s level - no one touch it!
Cement, water, pound pound pound, repeat.
Just a girl and her deck posts.
Crabapple trees are my absolute favorite. I love them in every single season. One of these years I will have an entire row planted along the driveway.
See how nice it looks out the kitchen window!
There’s our shaggy boys. Haircuts coming soon!
