Big Green Egg gets used!
But not for delicious slow-cooked BBQ - for a family of bay birds!
The poor Big Green Egg never sees any usage. Our big pellet grill does such a great job that we never need the Egg. We have been talking about selling it, which we probably will still do.
But not before the family of birds are through using it as a nest! Steve was grilling up some steaks last night when he heard quite the chirping coming from the Egg. Lo and behold, three hungry little mouths greeted him when he opened the lid.
Apparently we had left the top chimney slid open, and mama bird had made quite a gigantic nest out of the entire grill! I’m not sure how many eggs she was hoping to host in there, but she has been filling that thing up with straw and sticks for quite awhile.
I tried to use the Merlin app to capture what kind of angry bird was yelling at us from a nearby tree, assuming that might be the mama. But we don’t think it identified the correct bird, because we think she was a dark colored bird we saw hopping in the grass.
In any case, nice to see the 1,000 pound green monstrosity taking up space on my grilling deck is getting some use.
BTW, the Merlin app is a permanent obsession. Just put it in listening mode, and it is amazing how much birdsong it picks up!
