Seedlings starting to emerge
Thanks to several drizzly days after we planted the garden, most things are starting to appear right on schedule. Tiny little green reminders that if you plant it AND you water it, they will come.
So let’s take out our magnifying glasses and check out the action!
This far bed is my experimental miscellaneous perennials, native plants, and bulbs bed. Some of these were moved from various places last year, some were purchased this year. It will need irrigation added later this summer, but I haven’t yet put it on Steve’s list.
Lots of little potato plants pop up in this bed, because that what was in it last year.
Okay, Montana planted this bed in yellow squash, zucchini, and small sunflowers. The fabric is still useful even though you wouldn’t plant these in every single hole. Looks like thing germinated pretty well and will need to be thinned soon.
I think this is a photo of zinnia seedlings. That rounded 2-leaf structure looks familiar. I am really optimistic about these zinnias because I paid a premium for them - their colors will hopefully be special, lots of beautiful pastels. We will see!
This is the big surprise for me. These are tiny celosia seedlings, which amazingly grew from the absolutely tiniest seeds I’ve ever seen - they make poppy seeds look gigantic. I was so sure those tiny seeds would have washed away after the first rain. As you can see, I didn’t have a good way to plant just a few in each hole, so I will definitely have to do some thinning here!
Part of the corn block, looking good.
These red plants are volunteers from last year - they are red amaranth, a gorgeous plant, also with the super-tiny seeds. These fell off of the plants that were in this vicinity last fall, and all took hold along an irrigation line. Steve almost went out and killed them thinking they were weeds!
Looks like maybe bean action along the new climbing veggie trellis.
Looks like maybe climbing cucs on the other side of the trellis. Getting rid of that grass is going to be a full-time job this summer.
Lavender plants are happy!
One of three marigold beds. I ordered a bunch of special/different varieties of marigolds from a specialty farm, so it will be interesting to see what grows and how they look!
Strawberry bed doing its thing.
Tomatoes not quite thriving, but doing okay. Three of four have flowered. And some of the misc. marigolds I planted on each side are starting to pop up.
Borage from last year (it was EVERYWHERE - as much as I love it, it had to be pulled from most places it landed). It and morning glories are avoided by many gardeners because of this very reason, but I can’t help it, I love those little blue star flowers. This is actually going to be a zinnia bed, some special colors called “Unicorn Mix”.
More marigolds with some cosmos carryovers from last year that I left in place. You can see the crazy morning glories to the right. Those reseed EVERYWHERE also.
Hanging baskets looking good!
In the river rock in front of the porch you can see all of the little flower seeds from last year’s baskets that have taken root here. They will stay blooming for awhile, while there is at least a little bit of rain or spray from the baskets above. But once the water stops, these little guys will be toast.
