Pulling potatoes
We planted potatoes in the spring, and then (sort of) forgot about them. Which would not have been the end of the world, except that they were not set up with irrigation. That means they received almost ZERO water all summer. By the time I remembered that, “Oh yeah, we have that whole bed of potatoes”, it was too late.
So - bummer, but, not the end of the world. And the upside is that the potatoe pieces we put in the ground didn’t rot away - they actually created more potatoes, even without water! So, today I harvested what we will call, our “Mostly Baby Potatoes”.
And I have no idea what we are going to do with them, but at least now the potatoes are safe in the garage, and the bed is ready to be turned into a perennial bed.
My harvest technique is called “Sitting in the dirt, pulling them out by hand”.
This bed is being repurposed to hold perennials that I will pull out of the other beds and also some bulbs that I will add, which will be fun to have some early spring color. All of that straw that was used for mulch will go straight into the compost.
