Planting the potatoes
I ordered our seed potatoes from a small WA State Farm on Easter (late and some varieties are sold out, but they are all on sale then), and they arrived last week. Montana prepped them downstairs, which basically means cutting them into 2-inch/at least 1-eye pieces and letting them air dry for a few days.
Today was sunny and mild, so potato planting was the perfect late-afternoon activity. I never know how many pounds to purchase, so I guessed and bought 2 lbs each of seven different types.
At first we thought that would fill 2 rows. Then we quickly realized we would need to plant twice as close together and in 3 rows. That turned out to be just perfect.
We don’t have irrigation connected yet in the garden, and we don’t actually plan informally irrigating this 40’ row. But we gave them a pat and a drink, and they really need to take it from here without any pampering! Well, other than a valid hay that we will be spreading on top to hep keep our minimal moisture in.
In general we are getting excited about this year’s garden as things continue greening up, but we are still planning on taking it slow so we don’t burn anyone out.
And finally, ca photo of Montana taking a photo of Josie by some blooming pear trees, the baby espalier in the garden and the big guy by the fire pit behind the garden.
