Planting our own little Ode to Lavender

It seems a bit futile to grow any lavender plants when there is such a gorgeous professional lavender farm just around the corner. But inspiration turned into action when our local grocery market had some small lavender plants for sale.

So 9 little English lavender plants were welcomed into the garden.

Steve tilled up a 20x4’ bed in an unused edge. Lavender does not like a lot of water, so it will not be tied into our irrigation system. We supplemented the dirt with small gravel-sand, Petrilite, lime, and raised bed fertilizer. We covered the bed with landscape fabric and, as usual, we used a blow torch and coffee can to burn the planting holes. Before inserting the plants, I soaked them in water for 20 minutes or so, to help them deal with the stress of being transplanted. The whole thing was covered in 6 bags of cedar mulch.

July is not an ideal time to plant anything around here, but we gave these little plants the best shot possible!

And before we leave, why don’t we take a few more general garden pictures? It’s so peaceful and pretty out here! And the garden grass really benefits from the proximity to water, making it the only green grass around!
