Plan B

Today was supposed to be glacier walk day, but the wildfire smoke was not cooperating. The entire Columbia Icefields operation - a dizzying set of commercial excursions and activities, so many giant buses shuttling tourists all over the entire Icefields area - was completely shut down due to air quality and visibility. We killed some time while they were trying to figure if it was a delay or a cancellation playing mahjong in the van with the screen door. BTW - Steve has caught up and now wins more games than I do! Though he still irritatingly tends to say, “Oh, I THINK MAYBE I might possibly have a mahjong? I’m not sure….” Ugh!

We put our disappointment aside and decided to take in one more little hike down to Mistaya Canyon, which turned out to be pretty geologically amazing. And then we said goodbye to the truly magestic Northern Rockies and headed south toward Calgary. We have always loved Going-to-the-Sun Road at Glacier National Park, but we both agree we love this Parkway more. Glacier has gotten notably more busy, making it almost impossible to casually drive, stop, hike, take it in as we like to do since getting the campervan. Maybe we’ll try the Icefields again next September. It’s only a 7 hour drive from home!
