North unit highlights
Not a place for wildlife sitings, but the North section of TRNP definitely had some unique geology.
Our favorites were the Cannonball Concretions, spherical-shaped boulders that they still cannot completely explain. Very cool.
We took a little flat nature hike along the pretty dry Little Missouri River.
We were fascinated by the gray layers in so many of the formations and learned they are from bentonitic clay. They really stand out.
My two favorite photos of the day.
All in all, we were glad to have had the time to tour the North Unit on this trip. It is distinct from the South Unit in look and feel, and it scratched our geology itch! But after taking the scenic drive to the end we decided not to stay for dinner and sunset and instead headed back to the South for the rest of our visit.
