Montana’s latest fiber project

Montana and I went to a felting workshop in fall ‘23 at a local spot on the Bluff. Felting is the most amazing process. You take loose, fluffy wool pieces and then basically STAB them repeatedly and violently with a very sharp needle. Slowly over time a shape takes place. We made decorative pumpkins at that first class. It was really fun, but it was a lot of work to create the right shapes.

Well, apparently Montana continues her search for more things to do with all of her beautiful died wool. She found a soft but moth-ridden cashmere sweater at the thrift store and decided to felt over the holes. Very clever, but more importantly- look at what she did! Colorful, fun goldfish all over the dark blue sweater! There are several in the front and even one in the back.

This is not embroidered or stitched - it is stabbed and felted into the underlying fabric. It is even washable, as the work was still damp when I took these photos. Unbelievably cute!

This photo actually shows the BACK of one of the fish - the wool is literally felted into the fabric equally on both sides, it’s crazy.
