Montana’s corner garden
We have been so impressed by what the Birdie has done behind the driveway. When we moved in, this spot was basically where the garbage cans were stored - a plain area under the steps leading up to the first covered porch where we keep our grills. Nothing.
The first year she found a bunch of pieces of rusted structural steel and immediately started creating stairs in the hillside. Then she scavenged the property for bricks, digging dozens out of the old foundation that ultimately became our horseshoe pit and created a brick path to their doorway. She just continued on this vein, adding rock borders, rescuing plants from the discount racks, building trellises out of scavenged materials (including making the tripod trellises from last year’s sunflower plant stalks.)
She digs things in and out and moves them around. She finds and uses random chunks of cement. She relentlessly battles the chickens, who just love to dig up her mulch. She finds homes for found objects like the antique twin headboard. She uses unstructured whimsy, and we just love it. Our garden choices are always rectangular, but Montana’s are always free-form. As usual, these pictures do not do it justice. Very cool!
