Checking in on the garden
This is not a typical “winter” garden up here! Normally in early February the garden is pretty bleak and covered with snow. But the entire space is oddly green. We assume an actual winter is still ahead of us, and we have three and a half months before we can plant anything, but I swear it looks much more like February in Atlanta than Spokane.
I realize 50 degrees in February is no big deal for all of our Southern family and friends, but up here it’s C-R-A-Z-Y!
This bed was seeded with winter wheat, the one thing that is NOT supposed to completely die, even in the deep cold. But it’s quite a bit thicker. lusher, and greener than it is supposed to be for a cover crop!
Now THIS bed is what cover crops are supposed to look like. This is covered with a daikon radish crop, and it died out as expected when we got our first hard frost. It will protect and feed the soil all winter.
A little more winter wheat - since this is in the ground, we will till it in when May hits. This is where we will plant the vegetables that will grow up the new veggie trellis.
I am NOT supposed to be having to weed in February! Where is my snow cover?
So much green!
The one tiny bit of snow that still remains along the edge of the front driveway.
It has been another tough year for the ski hills -But there is still snow up on top of the mountain, so they are still skiing.
We got the large spool from a neighbor (It took all four of us to roll and drag it onto a trailer - it was HEAVY!) The goats think it is some kind of umbrella and prefer to lay under it instead of on top of it.
