Uh-oh, another rooster

We all know Sarge, our sweet, fluffy gray and white cochin rooster. He is such a beauty and has a great rooster personality (meaning he ignores the humans completely and is not a bully to the other birds.)

We noticed right away in this latest batch of babies from the poultry farm in Iowa that a gray one was a rooster. I try to order only females, but it’s not a perfect science and they also reserve the right to substitute. So we have been keeping a close eye on Slim, our skinny gray rooster-in-training. Slim has started crowing and is already making time with the ladies. He is extremely skittish, so I’m not 100% sure how things will go for Slim. We will see….

This is slim, caught mid-crow. He’s a loud one!

Well, this week I realized we have ANOTHER rooster in the new batch of babies. Meet “Legolas” ala “Legs”, named this because he has long skinny legs for a rooster. He has beautiful green-black feathers. He has also started crowing, and he seems to have a very relaxed personality. He comes up to me with the other birds and is quite sweet. Of course, he is only a few months old, so time will tell what his final rooster personality this spring will be. We have a zero tolerance policy for bad roosters!

…and outside of the coop!
