Rainy fall day

This weekend is going to be VERY fall-like in terms of being chilly and rainy. We might even have a winter storm warning lurking. I feel bad for the neighborhood Green Bluff orchards, as this should be peak Fall Festival apple-picking, pumpkin doughnut-eating, corn maze-walking, patio beer-drinking (aka money-making, crazy traffic jam-making) time.

But I absolutely love the muted colors against the overcast sky, and ANYtime we get rain up here we celebrate it!

A few photos capturing the changes underway.

Steve feeding some overgrown zucchini to the flock, courtesy of the sweet older green-thumbed couple who lives next door.

The last of the zinnias as brown becomes their dominant color. Love this flower above all others.

One of the very last morning glory blooms. They have been so great on the arched trellises.

The cover crops seem to be doing their thing, growing for now, adding nitrogen later. The grassy covers are the winter rye; the others are daikon radish tops. They are a funny contrast to the brown -ness of the surrounding fields.

Other garden colors.

And although I am really only interested in the flowering plants these days, I did gather quite a bit of produce while I was out there. Even the strawberries are still producing. And Montana and Elijah have a bunch of peppers to bring in, too.

And one little random bird hanging out on the back deck. The apple trees behind him are just about to change colors.
