Morning juicing ritual

I feel guilty whenever I have a kitchen appliance that doesn’t get used, so that juicer stares me down pretty relentlessly from the countertop. My favorite simple juice is just 4 carrots and an apple - sweet and delicious. But I don’t actually love drinking a whole glass of juice of any kind, and it doesn’t quite seem worth it to mess up the juicer for less.

One popular trend now are juice “shots”, meaning little 2 ounce mini juices that are packed with extra veggies and also some spices, specifically ginger, tumeric, and black pepper. I know, it sounds weird, but actually those spices are what MAKE the juice absolutely delicious. Carrots + apples alone is just a sweet drink, like thick orange juice. But when you add those spices and consume it in a tiny 2 oz serving, it’s a great morning ritual.

So I make up five little bottles at a time and keep them in the fridge. Give them a little shake.

My standard veggies/fruits are 4 carrots, 1 apple (if I have it), 1 roughly peeled lemon, and a jar of beets. The beets are my FAVORITE part of this drink, because I processed dozens of jars last year (because we ostensibly love beets), and I think we ate exactly ONE. So this gives me a way to finally use those beets (and no, I am NOT growing any more this year!) I know these beets kind of look like grapefruit sections, but they were just a variety that had mostly white flesh. Today I also added a few Cuties oranges, a half a yellow squash, and some raspberries I had in the fridge.

I add the spices at the end, because juicers don’t know what to do with ingredients they can’t pulverize.

Into the fridge they go, ready to be drinken over the next 5 days.

In terms of morning rituals, I should add the two tablespoons of my homemade lemon thyme oxymel (honey + vinegar), working on that immune system!

I also eat a few walnuts, primarily because I don’t really feel like breakfast lately (despite my very advanced oatmeal bar and smoothie station!) I still typically drink one cup of coffee, but it just doesn’t taste that great anymore, so I rarely have a second. I would prefer an iced chai latte made with a Nurri protein drink any day!

Oh - I see some ground flax seed in the background of this picture - I probably should experiment with adding that to my little juice recipe, because it’s a great source of fiber.
