Checking on the fall colors

We were only gone a few days, but we came back to the stark reality that we really are deep into fall. Somehow we almost forgot! It seems like we wait so long for fall to start that it sneaks up on us.

We are apparently having a 26 degree night tonight, so in between loads of laundry I thought I would grab a new round of photos, starting with the view out the back windows - snow on the mountain and apple trees in full fall colors.

I can’t believe the porch baskets have already survived several frosts. However tonight’s numbers might do them in.

The chickens are always happy to see the humans. You can hardly tell the difference between the babies and the full size hens these days.

I have noticed that we have at least one rooster in the batch of babies. I really hope Sarge stays as sweet as he is when that baby is full grown. Sometimes the rooster dynamics can be tricky.

Backyard views.

Three goats waiting semi-patiently to be released into the back field.

Snow on the mountain.

Now the front yard and garden.

I tried planting a few of the later beds with cover crop, but although they received plenty of rain, it’s been just too cold to support germination. So the beds are clean, but won’t get the winter coverage. No problem- the cover cropping is just a big experiment this year anyway.
